WELCOME TO GETTYS MIDDLE SCHOOL!

This page is developed to support our rising 6th grade students and their families. Gettys Greatness is our tradition and our expectation for all future students. We look forward to starting a partnership with you as we make Gettys great together!

RISING 6TH GRADE SUPPORT:
The administration of Gettys Middle School will visit each of our elementary schools during February to personally meet our 5th grade parents and to introduce them to Gettys Greatness and important information for the 2014-2015 school year. All parent night events will start at 6:00 pm.
February 27 at Crosswell Elementary, February 26 at McKissick Elementary (5:30), February 17 at Forest Acres Elementary, February 18 at West End Elementary, and February 20 at East End Elementary.
The current 5th graders will visit and tour Gettys Middle School on April 1 starting at 8:30 am. Our 5th grade parents can tour our new facility on April 29 at 6:00 pm. Our 8th grade students will visit each elementary school so students can answer the 5th grade students questions on May 29. We will also conduct the 6th grade Meet the Teacher event on August 13 to receive schedules and important back to school information.

RISING 6TH GRADE PARENT TOUR
The Rising 6th Grade Parent Tour of GMS will be held on Tuesday, April 29 from 6:00-7:00 pm in the GMS Auditorium. This parent orientation will allow our new parents to receive a tour and information about our school just like your children did when they visited our school in April.

MEET THE STAFF 6TH GRADE REGISTRATION ANNOUNCED
The annual Meet the Staff day to welcome students back to school, receive their class schedules, and meet their 2014-2015 teachers will be in August 13, 2014 from 3:30 pm to 6:30 pm in the GMS gym.  Proof of residence is required for new students to GMS. We recommend paper, pen/pencil, and a three-ring binder to start school to support your child with supplies and organization materials. A more detailed supply list will be provided.

UPDATED COURSE SELECTION FORM AVAILABLE
At Gettys Middle School, our families will select exploratory courses of their choice that will complete two of your child's six classes. Rising 6th grade students will receive a tour of our school and our programs to assist in this decision. Following their tour of our school, they should complete this Exploratory Course Selection Form and returned it to their 5th grade teacher for our review.  All students that turned in their forms will have their choices considered in developing a schedule for their exploratory classes.  If a student fails to complete this form we will simply assign them exploratory classes.  If your child has not completed this form last school year you can obtain another copy by clicking HERE or contact our main office at 397-3900.

ADVANCED MATH CRITERIA
There are two Math courses in sixth grade: 6th grade Math and Advanced Math. Students must meet the criteria each year to be considered for the Advanced Math class. The criteria is you must meet 2 of the 3 criteria. (1) A 5th grade Math average of 90 or higher. (2) A 4th grade Math PASS score of Exemplary. (3) A Winter or Spring MAP score in 5th grade Math of 240 or higher.

GIFTED AND TALENTED
Students in SDPC are served with gifted and talented through their English classes at the middle school level. Therefore, if a student is identified as Gifted and Talented (like the Quest Program in elementary) they will be served in a 6th grade Gifted and Talented English class. The other English class that we offer in 6th grade is a 6th grade English class. Students must meet the state Gifted and Talented requirements to be eligible.

SCHEDULES
GMS is a school of nearly 1,400 students and a 6th grade of nearly 500 students, which is very different than our elementary schools. We do not accept parent requests of individual teachers. We offer highly qualified teachers in all areas that are very successful. We use student's academic achievement data, criteria such as special education or gifted and talented, as well as demographic data for scheduling academic courses.  We meet the educational needs of our students. Parents and students have input with a choice of exploratory classes in middle school, but again that does not involve requests of individual teachers. Schedules are published in August at our Meet the Staff event, prior to school starting, so students can visit their actual teachers and room locations to support their successful start of the school year.
